To face a pandemic, Union demands stoppage at Embraer in Portugal and USA

We have toaims to preserve the lives of workers in the face of the advancing pandemic of the coronavirus.

The Union sent a letter to the president of Embraer, Francisco Gomes Neto, demanding an immediate stoppage of activities at plants located in the United States and Portugal. The claim, presented this Friday (3), aims to preserve the lives of workers in the face of the advancing pandemic of the coronavirus.

In the document, the Union argues that the Fort Lauderdale and Melbourne (USA) units, in addition to Ogma and Évora (Portugal), adopt the same measures practiced by Embraer in Brazil. Here, workers are on collective vacations or in a home office regime, as a way to reduce the risks of contamination.

"The United States and Portugal have high rates of contagion of the disease and it is strange that the measure adopted in plants in Brazil has not been adopted in those countries", says an excerpt from the letter, which also calls for the repatriation of all Brazilians who work abroad.

As in Brazil, the Union defends that the salaries, rights and jobs of Embraer workers in the United States and Portugal must be respected during the period at home. Embraer has about 2,000 workers in both countries.

São José dos Campos, April 3rd, 2020

Francisco Gomes Neto

President of Embraer S.A.

Mr. Gomes Neto:

São José dos Campos Metalworkers’ Union requires immediate shutdown of Embraer / Yaborã plants both in the United States and Portugal.

Embraer and Brazilian Unions made an agreement to halt operations at all Brazilian plants in order to preserve workers’ safety and lives from Coronavirus pandemic.

We learned from American and Portuguese workers that all facilities in their countries are operational in the midst of Coronavirus outbreak locally.

Due to high rate of coronavirus spread in these countries, we urge you to bring operations to a halt in all facilities at Fort Lauderdale and Melbourne, FL., USA and at Ogma and Évora, Portugal and workers to be put on paid leave at no loss in pay, with their labor rights and jobs guaranteed.

We also demand the repatriation of Brazilian workers who are on mission at these plants.

Due to the relevance of workers’ health and lives, we hope these Union demands will be addressed and met. Thank you for your attention.

Kind regards,

HERBERT CLAROS DA SILVA
