GM Autoworkers in Brazil Stands For Job Security
The Metalworkers Union demands GM's transparency in restructuring plans
GM workers will start a new campaign for “job security”. The decision was passed at a mass meeting on November 28th, 2018.
The campaign is meant to fight back General Motors' global restructuring plan announced on November 26th.
GM plans to close seven of its plants around the world and dismiss 15% of its total employees. In North America alone, there are 14,800 dismissals in sight.
Five of the plants to be closed are in the United States and Canada. The company has not yet announced the other plants. The São Jose dos Campos Metalworkers Union demands GM's transparency in restructuring plans.
"It is the right of all unions and workers to know which plants will be closed. And we must not forget that GM is not in crisis. Our union in Brazil joins the international struggle for jobs along with the workers in North America" said Metalworkers Union vice president Renato Almeida.
Job Cuts in Sao Jose dos Campos
The layoffs were already carried out at São José dos Campos plant in Brazil. The union will carry out actions together with the community to stop the layoffs.
It is important to remember that GM is still owing the R $ 2.5 billion investment it has commited itself to make at the São José dos Campos plant.
