Re-nationalization now!

Metalworkers sign manifesto against the selling of Embraer

Unified campaign against the selling of the company was launched this Tuesday

A unified campaign against the selling of Embraer was launched this Tuesday (16), by the metalworkers unions of São José dos Campos (CSP-Conlutas), Botucatu (Força Sindical) and Araraquara (CUT). As part of the activities, a manifesto was signed defending the re-nationalization of Embraer.

From today, the three unions will focus their struggles against the selling of Embraer to Boeing. In the following days, assemblies will take place in each one of the factories of the three cities involved.
In the manifesto, the re-nationalization is stated as “essential to preserve national sovereignty and the jobs of Brazilian workers, and to stop the accelerated process of de-nationalization of the company.”

Unions also criticize the injection of public money into the former state company and they make a direct demand to President Michel Temer. Despite having being privatized, Embraer continued receiving public resources. Only between 2001 and 2016, the BNDES released US $ 14 billion to finance exports of airplanes assembled in Brazil.
In the campaign, the unions defend the re-nationalization as a form of defense of national sovereignty and jobs.

“The government cannot yield to commercial pressures. It is necessary to defend the interests of Brazil and the Brazilian people, not Boeing’s interests. President Michel Temer has the obligation to veto this negotiation and use the Golden Share action (special action that grants the government the power of veto) to stop the state from definitively losing control of Embraer.”

The launching of the campaign was led by the vice-president of the union of São José dos Campos, Hebert Claro, the president of the Araraquara Union, Paulo Sérgio Frigere and the leader of the Botucatu Union, Fabiano Roque.

Among the activities that will be developed, public audiences are programed in the Chamber of Representatives, the Senate and Municipal Chambers, an international seminar with the workers of all Embraer subsidiaries and involve the population in the discussions, through journals on the subject and social networks.

Down below follows the entire manifesto:

Manifesto against the selling of Embraer to Boeing
Embraer, the third major airplane builder of the world, is being negotiated with the North American Boeing, a giant of the aerial industry. Born in 1969, within the CTA (Aerospace Technological Center), in São José dos Campos (SP), Embraer holds today technology to develop and produce commercial, executive, agricultural and military aircrafts, besides aerospace pieces, satellites and frontier monitoring. Thus, it is strategic for Brazil. Its handing over, total or partial, represents a risk for national sovereignty.

Any commercial transaction that represents the transference of control of Embraer will be prejudicial to the country and deserves rejection from the entire society. The company generates 17 thousand direct jobs and 5 thousand outsourced in Brazil, it is the greatest exporting company in the country, with subsidiaries in São José dos Campos (parent), Gavião Peixoto, Botucatu, Taubaté and Sorocaba. To sell it would repeat and deepen the mistake committed in 1994, when it was privatized.

Despite the seriousness of the facts, neither Embraer nor Boeing clarified which are the actual terms of negotiation. Among the possible contracts to be signed, none is favorable for Brazil. In the end, a giant like Boeing will not enter a commercial transaction if it is not going to win. Embraer and Brazil will only lose by handing over knowledge.

Brazil as an important debate ahead. The interest of Boeing for Embraer shows that the privatization of the Brazilian company was a mistake and this process needs to be reverted urgently. The re-nationalization is essential to preserve national sovereignty and the job of Brazilian workers, and to stop the accelerated process of de-nationalization of the company.

Even continuing to receive public money after privatization, Embraer adopted the policy of denationalization through the transference of part of production abroad, like the Legacy and Phenom jets to the United States. Pieces of the military cargo KC390, which had a cost of R$ 6 billion for public funds, are being produced abroad.

The government cannot yield to commercial pressures. It is necessary to defend the interests of Brazil and the Brazilian people, not Boeing’s interests. President Michel Temer has the obligation to veto this negotiation and use the Golden Share action (special action that grants the government the power of veto) to stop the state from definitively losing control of Embraer.

The history of mergers and building of monopolies shows the result of these transactions are dismissals, withdrawal of rights and shutting down of factories. We cannot close our eyes before this reality.

Before this scenario, we defend:
- Embraer is ours.
- No to the selling of Embraer to Boeing.
- Re-nationalization now! In defense of national sovereignty and jobs.
