Embraer workers define struggles plan against layoffs

Assembly delayed the entry of workers in the production sector for two hours

Embraer workers approved on Thursday (18th ) in an assembly a struggles plan against layoffs programmed by the company. The voting brought together around 8,000 workers from the production and administrative sector and delayed for two hours the entrance of the first shift. The assembly began by 5:45 am and ended at 7:45 am.

The assembly was a category response to the Voluntary Layoff Plan (PDV) announced by Embraer in August 8th . The proposal, submitted by the Metalworkers Union of São José dos Campos (CSP-Conlutas) and approved by the workers, requires the immediate cancellation of the layoff plan. Otherwise, the guideline to be followed by the workers will be "Did the company fire? - The workers stopped the services".

As an alternative to layoffs, the Workers Union proposed that Embraer stop transferring the production process to other countries and that the shareholders take responsibility for the payment of the fine of US$ 200 million related to the corruption case investigated by the Federal Prosecution Service of Rio de Janeiro.

Jobs outside Brazil
The denationalization process of Embraer's production is one of the reasons that can lead to jobs closure in Brazil. The company has already transferred the production of the Phenom jets to the United States and the next to be transferred will be the Legacy model production line.

The layoff plan contradicts the statement made in June by the President and CEO of Embraer Executives Jets, Marco Tulio Pellegrini. At that time he asserted to the press that "every job generated in the United States would generate another five in Brazil." What can be seen today is just the opposite. The Melbourne plant employs 600 workers and shall open another 600 jobs in a five-year-period. In Brazil, on the other hand, Embraer plans are for work positions cuts.

Taxpayer Money
The Workers Union also presented at the Assembly, the amount saved by Embraer with the exemption of payroll granted by the Federal Government. The survey carried out by Diesse (Inter-Union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies) shows that between the years 2013 and 2015, the company ceased to pay R$ 1.1 billion in taxes.

The Act for the payroll tax exemption was enacted on December 14, 2011, as part of the Plan Greater Brazil, as an incentive for jobs creation.

"Embraer wants workers to pay for the mistakes and irresponsible actions made by it. We will not pay this account. We will fight against layoffs and take this mobilization not only to the Embraer factories, but also to all metalworkers of São Paulo State", said the licensed vice president of the Union, Herbert Claros.

The Metalworkers Union of São José dos Campos is going to call workers unions from other workers’ sectors asking them to join the struggle in defense of jobs. In São Bernardo do Campo, for example, Mercedes-Benz should lay off 1,870 workers as of September.
