Solidarity to GM São José dos Campos workers under threat of being dismissed

To:

Jaime Ardila
GM South America President and GM Brazil Provisional President

Artur Bernardo Neto
GM Brazil Labor Assistance and Union Relations Manager

C/C to:

Federal Government
São Paulo State Government
São José dos Campos City Hall

We have become aware that General Motors insists on dismissing around 1,500 workers from the plant in São José dos Campos, in São Paulo state, Brazil, next January 26th.

We see no reasonable grounds for the mass dismissal. It is widely known that GM Brazil still breaks records in sales and, just like other automakers in the country, the company has received several tax benefits from Dilma's government.

If they happen, such layoffs will represent a real social tragedy to the city, doing away with highly qualified workforce and destroying the only source of money from many breadwinners.

Besides, there are several companies which serve the automakers sector and depend directly on GM to go on running their businesses. Studies show that laying off ONE single worker results in fewer seven (direct and indirect) job posts along the productive chain.

For all these reasons, we hereby demonstrate our full solidarity to GM workers' struggle and demand that the company stop the 1,500 layoffs. They must take the propositions presented by the São José dos Campos Metalworkers Union into account so that these job posts are kept.

We also address to the Brazilian government, to the São Paulo State government and to the São José dos Campos City Hall, so that they take actions together GM intended to prevent these layoffs from happening. The company must have social responsibility in favor of the city and the country.
