Case GM shows that workers must stand together to fight back and keep their rights

Furthermore, behind this permanent threat to both jobs and labor rights is capitalism.

In November 2018, General Motors announced its plans to close 7 plants: 4 in the U.S., one in Canada and 2 more in other countries.

13,800 dismissals are planned for the U.S. and Canada alone in order to save US$ 2.5 billion in 2019.

In Brazil, GM management blackmailed the workers threatening production discontinuity.

The plant in São José dos Campos was the most sensitive issue.

Due to the union strong opposition to concessions, the workers have better benefits.

GM managers presented 28 demands to union including broad outsourcing, longer working hours and the end of job security for injured workers. On February 1, a workers’ mass meeting rejected the demands.
After new round of bargaining, GM management reduced their demands to 10 which are similar to the contracts already in place for workers at other automakers’ plants.

In exchange R$ 5 billion will be invested in that plant along the next 3 years. On February 7, four thousand workers gathered in a mass meeting accepted the agreement. The lessons of this dispute show that workers must stand together nationally and internationally to fight back and keep their rights. Otherwise the bosses will be able to get concessions from the working class.

Furthermore, behind this permanent threat to both jobs and labor rights is capitalism.

CSP-Conlutas stands for socialism internationally as only workers’ power will provide proper living for all humanity.
