Metalworker Union defends that the Federal government veto the Embraer sales plans
Company is the only Brazilian aircraft manufacturer and the third largest in this sector in the world
The possibility of the US Company Boeing to buy Embraer, as reported by the press, on this Thursday (Dec.21st), is repudiated by the Metalworkers Union of São José dos Campos and Region, affiliated to the CSP-Conlutas.
The only Brazilian aircraft manufacturer and the third largest in this sector in the world, Embraer is strategic for the country and cannot be sold to foreign capital. We demand that the federal government vetoes the sale and, finally, re-nationalize Embraer so as to preserve and resume this national patrimony.
Also according to information released by the press, the negotiations completion depends on the government decision, since it holds special class shares of Embraer, the golden shares. This shows that the negotiations have been carried out since a long time now, away from the public's knowledge.
Embraer currently employs around 16,000 workers in Brazil and has been adopting a deep policy for denationalizing the production. The sale to Boeing will jeopardize these jobs and the very permanence of the factory in the country.
It is important to remember that, on last July 19, the Ministry of Finance requested consultation with the Brazilian Court of Audit on the possibility of giving up the golden shares of Embraer, Vale and IRB-Brasil Resseguros. Without these shares, the government loses the veto power over these companies.
In the case of Embraer, the golden shares give veto power on issues such as sale, military programs and access to technology.
As workers' representative, the Metalworkers Union reaffirms its position in favor of the veto on the Embraer sale and on its re-nationalization.
