SOLIDARITY TO THE STRIKE OF THE GENERAL MOTORS WORKERS IN BRAZIL

Metalworkers are fighting for the increase in the value of PLR Bonus

Workers at General Motors in São José dos Campos (Brazil) began a strike on January, 18, demanding an increase in the value of the PLR Bonus*

GM is the second largest automaker in the country, produces the car which is leader in sales in the domestic market, transferred US$ 9 billion to its shareholders and is the only major automaker that wants to drastically lower the PLR value. Meanwhile, workers are suffering due to the rise in inflation, are paying more for food, transportation and basic services.

The strike continues until the company accepts the claims. Other GM plants in Brazil, in São Caetano do Sul and Gravataí can also go on strike at any time.

"Our struggle is, in addition to the PLR, for employment and against layoffs at automakers", said the president of the Metalworkers Union of São José dos Campos, Antonio Ferreira de Barros, Macapá.

International solidarity is crucial to the workers victory, as the company tries, in every way, to lower the wage conditions. The CSP-Conlutas and the International Committee of Workers Organization of the Automotive Sector (ICOG) calls all the organizations to express support for this fair struggle of Brazilian workers.

*PLR It is a bonus provided by the employer and negotiated with the union, which is calculated in relation to profits and results achieved by the company during the year. Generally, targets are stipulated and when hit, serve as basis to calculate the bonus.
